It is a privilege for Sotheby's to be involved with the Art for Africa auction, and I am honoured to be the auctioneer for this historic event supporting the Africa Foundation and the Ikamva Labantu charities.

In the pages of this catalogue you will find the most wonderful works in a variety of media (painting, sculpture, drawing and performance). I'm confident that this sale represents the most comprehensive offering to date of works by South Africa's leading artists.

Amongst them you will find a key drawing, 'World on its Hind Legs' by internationally renowned artist William Kentridge, 'Church in Khayelitsha' by Joyce Ntobe and 'Misgivings Confirmed' by John Meyer, to name just a few. The generosity of these artists in donating works has been extraordinary, and they are united here with other international artists including Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley and Gavin Turk from the UK, each of whom is represented by an important art work.
