Art for Africa celebrates the close historical relationship between South Africa and the United Kingdom, in a collaboration of leading contemporary artists in one show and auction.
As an artist, I feel that the link between the extreme privilege and wealth of Europe and the poverty of Africa is art. As artists, we plumb the depths of despair and fly with the angels in our quest to make art. With 'Art for Africa' through the compassion of the artists, we live up to Picasso's statement that 'art is love made real'. Our art is used as a means to raise much-needed funds while enriching the lives of those who have been fortunate enough to acquire it.
It seems Africa, the Cradle of Modern Art, tragically resembles more a coffin than a cradle. The continent seems to act as a crucible for the world's ills; the beauty and energy tainted by the shadow of poverty and AIDS. In spite of the daunting numbers - the equivalent of three airbuses full of people dying every day in Southern Africa of AIDS related diseases - we cannot afford to be overwhelmed and shut ourselves off. The people we help are mostly happy, often healthy kids who could be yours or mine, looked after by grannies and foster mothers in their humble abodes.
Art for Africa is about giving. In our African culture, there is a word 'UBUNTU' which means showing concern and kindness to others. It is in this spirit that 'Art for Africa' exists and we hope will inspire you to pay for the treasures offered to you, beyond their market value. May the angels shine a bright light forever upon the artists who have donated, the people who have worked tirelessly to make Art for Africa what it is, the buyers who will go home with the prizes and to the children who will grow up to be our future.
