Part of the BODYWORKS series looking at the way people decorate themselves to express their individuality and personality. It touches on the tattoo images Verster has been obsessed with for a number of years, and which he is still working on today.
Born Johannesburg 1937
Andrew Verster studied at the Camberwell School of Art and Reading University, and lectured at the University of Durban Westville (then University College, Durban) and the Natal Technikon until 1976 when he gave up teaching to become a full-time painter. He collaborated with the architect Hans Hallen on the design and dÉcor for the Mangosuthu Technikon and the Brenthurst Library. He is also a writer of short stories, articles and radio plays, and winner of the BBC World Service Playwriting Competition in 1992 with 'You may leave, the show is over'.
One of his most recent exhibitions was 'Past/Present: Andrew Verster' at the Iziko South African National Art Gallery in Cape Town.
