Artist biography:

Born: 1971, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Thomas Mulcaire graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1993 with a degree in Art History and Literature.

Mulcaire’s work often takes the form of collaborations or structural interventions, such as one of his most recent projects, the film Afrika, a collaboration with Ricardo de Oliveira.

Mulcaire has exhibited widely, in such major international exhibitions as the Bienal de São Paulo in 1998, the 2004 Biennale of Sydney, Art Unlimited in Basel in 2008 and the Bienal del Fin del Mundo in Ushuaia, Argentina in 2009. He has had solo exhibitions at Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris in 1999, the South African National Gallery in Cape Town in 2003, Spectrum Gallery in Perth, Australia in 2003 and the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg (2008) and Cape Town (2009), the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg in 2010 and Lumiar Cité, Lisbon in 2011.

In 2004 Mulcaire moved to Itamambuca, Brazil where he currently lives and works.

Ricardo de Oliveira’s work has been shown in galleries in New York, such as Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, American Fine Arts, Pat Hearn Gallery, Sara Meltzer Gallery as well as in the Galerie Drantmann, Brussels, Galerie air-de-Paris, Paris and Galerie Phillipe Rizzo, Paris.

In 1993, together with the artist Sarah Morris he created Close-Up a short-lived project space in the heart of Times Square, which attracted the attention of the art world and the media. In 1995, the artist participated in the Centennial Anniversary of the Venice Biennale in the group exhibit titled Campo. His work has also been featured at the Wienner Secession, Vienne and at Le Magasin-Centre de Art Contemporarie, Grenoble, and featured in major art magazines such as Art in America, Art Forum, Art News, Flash Art and Camera Austria.

Kei Road and Samora Michell are both stills from the artists’ most recent collaboration - Afrika, which features Brazilian surfers Cassio Sanchez, Fernando Fanta, James Santos and Mario Massarelli on a road trip through Mozambique and South Africa during the 2010 World Cup.

Ricardo de Oliveira lives and works in New York.
