Artist biography:

Born in Bournemouth in 1980

Studied advanced art and design at the School of Art and Design, Poole in Dorset, England (1997), and painting and printmaking at Bretton Hall, Yorkshire (2000 ).

Stuart Semple's drawing, painting and printmaking re-articulates pop cultural elements into a personal universe of fear, isolation and nostalgia. His works balance a fabricated, mechanized perfection with an emotive painterly surface where symbols collide ambiguously. This deliberate indeterminate nature within the work neither celebrates nor criticizes popular culture, remaining autonomous in the recording of visual contemporary reality. Semple's sincerity and willingness for sublimation within his work has placed him as one of the leading exponents within a new generation of British painters.

Stuart Semple has exhibited worldwide in both solo and group exhibitions and has featured in biennales in Mexico, Liverpool and Sao Paulo. He has also curated group exhibitions internationally.

Semple's 'Happy Cloud' installation was shown at the Tate Modern in London in 2009. One of his latest solo exhibitions, 'Everlasting Nothing Less', was shown at Anna Kustera, New York in 2009.
