Artist biography:
Born: 1971, Maryland
Shinique Smith received her BFA and MFA from The Maryland College of Art; she has also trained at Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Art.
Smith works in a variety of artistic media, including painting, sculpture, collage, and video. She is best known for her bundled sculptures and three-dimensional installations.
Smith's work was exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2009; she was the second artist engaged to design and execute an installation for the museum's project space. Her work has also been exhibited at a number of other galleries across the United States including the National Portrait Gallery (Washington DC), The New Museum, (New York), Contemporary Arts Center, (New York); The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, (Colorado) as well as the Deutsche Guggenheim, (Berlin). Her work is included in public collections such as The Denver Art Museum, (Colorado); The Studio Museum, (New York); The Margulies Collection, (Miami); The Rubell Family Collection, (Miami); and the Maryland Institute College of Art, (Baltimore).
Shinique Smith lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
