Born in 1976 in Cape Town
Pieter Hugo is a South African photographer whose photographs often centre on people marginalized from mainstream society. His work follows the lineage of the social photography of August Sander or Diane Arbus or of contemporaries such as Thomas Struth and Rineke Dijkstra.
His latest exhibition 'Nollywood,' at the Michael Stevenson Gallery in Cape Town, explores the multilayered reality of the Nigerian film industry. His project 'Hyena and Other Men' was exhibited at FOAM_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2008.
Hugo's awards include the Discovery Award, Rencontres d'Arles Festival, KLM Paul Huf Award and the Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art 2007.
