Artist biography:

Born: 1961, Paris, France

Matt Magee received his MFA from the Pratt Institute. He has been the recipient of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation Residency in Bethany, Connecticut in 2007 and has received a New York State Foundation for the Arts Painting Grant in 2002 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 1991. His most recent solo exhibition was held in 2009 at the Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery in Houston, Texas.

Magee describes himself as a scavenger and archivist and his paintings are based on systems of randomness and order. Often a word and its associations become a title, a starting point for a painting. The barcodes and wavy lines depicted in his works are devices that record time and information in the same way that a scientific graph or chart might. As the paintings develop, the artist pushes towards a metaphysical layer where the language of form and rhythm become a diagram for the unconscious.

Magee has been featured in a number of solo and group exhibitions. Most recently, his work was included at January WhiteSale at Loretta Howard Gallery in an exhibition curated by Beth Rudin DeWoody, at the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Benefit at Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York and Art and at Knoedler & Co. at Art Basel/Miami.

Matt Magee currently lives and works in New York City.
