Artist biography:
Born: 1982, Johannesburg, South Africa
Mary Sibande received her B-Tech degree in Fine Arts at the University of Johannesburg. In her painting and sculpture, she uses the human form to explore post-colonial South African identity and to critique stereotypical depictions of women, especially black women, in society.
The artist has had two major solo exhibitions; Long live the dead Queen, Art Festival, Grahamstown (2010) and Long Live The Dead Queen, Inner City Johannesburg. Her work has been featured in a number of group exhibitions; Four Tales, Gallery MOMO, Johannesburg (2008), l'Exposition du Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres, Senegal (2010), (Re)construction Contemporary Art from South Africa, Museum of Contemporary Art, Brazil (2011), ARS 11 at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Finland (2011) and at the South African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and at in the South African Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011).
Her works in major public collections include; South Africa National Gallery (SANG), Art Centre Basel, Pirelli and the University of Kansas
Mary Sibande lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.
