Artist biography:
Born: 1968, New York
Jeff Sonhouse received his training at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at Hunter College of the City of New York.
His work was included in Legacies: Contemporary Artists Reflect on Slavery, New York Historical Society, New York, NY, 2006, and Frequency, The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY, 2005. He is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, and was featured in the exhibition of 30 Americans at the Rubell Family Collection in Miami from December 2008 - May 2009.
Sonhouse has exhibited across the United States in both solo and group exhibitions. His vivid portraits, rendered as mixed media paintings or drawings, depict a variety of political and anonymous figures, their faces sometimes masked or completely obscured. He deconstructs accepted theories of ownership and invites viewers to re-examine how they interpret relationships of power.
He has exhibited widely across the United States both in solo shows and group exhibitions. These have included: Jack Tilton Gallery, New York, NY; Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY; Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, NY; Samson Projects, Boston, MA; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta, GA; The New York Historical Society, New York, NY.
