Artist biography:
Born in Johannesburg in 1962
Tillim started photographing professionally in 1986 and joined Afrapix, a collective of South African photographers with whom he worked closely until 1990. His work as a freelance photographer in South Africa for the local and foreign media included positions with Reuters between 1986 and 1988, and Agence France Press in 1993 and 1994.
Tillim most recent work, 'Roma, città di mezzo' was commissioned by FotoGrafia, the international photography festival of Rome, which ran from May to August 2009. The work was exhibited at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Milano, 13 - Palazzo della Fontana. His most recent exhibition, 'Avenue Patrice Lumumba' ran from July to August 2009. It studied the many avenues and squares in Africa named after Patrice Lumumba, one of the first elected African leaders of modern times, who won the Congo election after independence from Belgium in 1960.
Tillim was awarded the first Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography by the Peabody Museum at Harvard University.
Tillim's work is in important international collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Canada; National Museum of Photography, Denmark; South African National Gallery, Cape Town and Johannesburg Art Gallery.
