Artist biography:
Born: 1951, New York
Gary Komarin received a BA in Art and English Literature from Albany State University. He subsequently attended the New York Studio School and the Brooklyn Museum School. Komarin received a graduate teaching fellowship and his MFA in Painting from Boston University, where he was a student of Philip Guston.
Komarin has taught and lectured at numerous institutions including SCAD, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, Rice University, and the Brandeis Group. He has received numerous awards such as the Joan Mitchell Prize in Painting and has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the Houston Post. His work is in many private and public collections, including AT&T, Continental Airlines, Galerie ProArta in Zurich, McDonald's, Microsoft, Nordstrom Corporation as well as the Museum of Fine Art in Houston.
Komarin uses quick drying mediums like tempera, water-based enamel, and graphite as well as scratching and on-canvas blending which leaves his paintings with a 'sense of urgency', and yet a touch of romanticism.
