Komarin received a graduate teaching fellowship and his MFA in Painting from Boston University, where he was a student of Philip Guston.

Komarin has taught and lectured at numerous institutions including SCAD, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, Rice University, and the Brandeis Group. He has received numerous awards such as the Joan Mitchell Prize in Painting and has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and the Houston Post. Komarin uses quick drying mediums like tempera, water-based enamel, and graphite as well as scratching and on-canvas blending which leaves his paintings with a 'sense of urgency', and yet a touch of romanticism.
